Kathy Holcombe and her family once ran a boutique wedding and portrait photography business, creating images in scenic, remote locations. But today, they’re on a completely different path, living life on the road, capturing travel stories, and inspiring thousands as commercial photographers and influencers. Here’s how they made the shift from traditional photography to becoming full-time content creators, and what they’ve learned along the way.
Starting Out: From Weddings to Wanderlust
Before becoming digital nomads, Kathy and her husband were successful wedding and portrait photographers. For years, they captured beautiful moments for couples, setting up dramatic shots in some truly remarkable places. But they also had a love for adventure and spent time sharing their family’s journeys online. Eventually, this storytelling sparked interest from brands who reached out, eager to have the Holcombes create content for them.
“At first, we didn’t plan to change careers,” Kathy explains. “We kept our wedding business going, but our passion for family adventures and photography naturally led us to something new. After a few years, we were creating so much content for brands that we decided to shift our focus completely.” The Holcombes expanded their creative outlets by adding video to the mix, launching a YouTube channel where they share travel images, stories, and videos from their adventures.
Taking the Leap: From Home to RV Life
For Kathy and her family, the big leap wasn’t just changing careers; it was changing their entire lifestyle.
“Selling our home and moving into an RV felt extreme at the time. Hardly anyone was doing it, but we felt compelled to pursue our dreams,” she recalls.
Once they took that first step, everything else fell into place, and pursuing commercial photography and content creation became a natural evolution of their journey.
Building a New Path
Kathy’s entrepreneurial spirit guided her as they transitioned from traditional photography into their new life on the road. Building a successful business in travel content creation requires strategy and hard work, something Kathy understands well. “We approach our business strategically, always considering what’s next for our industry and how we can continue creating relevant content. It’s challenging, but it’s also deeply rewarding.”
Living the Dream: The Pan-American Highway Adventure
Today, Kathy and Peter are living out a dream they’ve had for decades. They’re traveling along the Pan-American Highway, a journey spanning two continents, from Alaska to Argentina. They’ve been on the road for 16 months and are currently in northern Argentina.
“We’ve traveled through 16 countries so far, and sometimes it’s hard to believe this is our life,” Kathy shares. “It’s a dream come true.”
Advice for Career Shifters: “Love the Journey”
For those considering a career shift, Kathy’s advice is simple yet powerful.
“We’ve always believed that anything is possible with enough hard work. If you’re contemplating a big change, make sure you truly love the path that will get you there. Enjoy the journey, embrace mistakes, and keep moving forward. Even if you don’t end up exactly where you planned, you’ll end up somewhere amazing.”
Kathy and Peter’s journey from wedding photography to full-time adventuring shows us that following your passion might lead you somewhere you never expected—but somewhere incredible all the same.
